Weird Victorian Christmas Postcards – Set of 10 Vintage Illustrations

A Very Weird Victorian Christmas.

Christmas in Victorian times was apparently a rather peculiar affair. Dancing vegetables, eccentric animals, unexpected dinner guests and creatures behaving in ways that defy all reasonable explanation - these wonderfully strange illustrations offer a glimpse into the more surreal side of nineteenth-century festive celebrations.

This collection brings together ten different Victorian Christmas illustrations, carefully reproduced as a set of classic A6 postcards. Wonderfully imaginative, mischievous and occasionally downright baffling, they're perfect for anyone who prefers their festive greetings with a little eccentricity.

A Curious Christmas Collection

Among the peculiar characters you'll encounter are a distinguished parsnip gentleman, an extravagantly dressed cat, a festive polar bear, a rather sociable (or sinister?) goat, courting frogs and ducks, and a Christmas dinner that appears to have developed a life of its own.

Victorian Christmas illustrations were not always the cosy, sentimental scenes we associate with the period today. Alongside familiar robins, snowy landscapes and holly, nineteenth-century artists embraced absurd humour, anthropomorphic vegetables, strange animals and wonderfully unexpected situations.

These postcards celebrate that lesser-known side of Victorian Christmas — where the festive season could be every bit as surreal as it was sentimental.

Send Them, Frame Them, Keep Them

Perfect for sending an unusual Christmas greeting, slipping into a gift, adding to a scrapbook, framing as miniature works of art or displaying among your festive decorations.

And if you find them simply too peculiar to part with, we entirely understand. ♡
