"Still Life: Vase with Irises Against a Yellow Background" by Vincent van Gogh, 1890.

Vincent Van Gogh painted the Irises during his last weeks at the psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy. It was meant to be a study in colour, examining the powerful contrast between the purple iris flowers and the yellow background. Over time the red pigments faded away, leaving the vivid blue behind. Van Gogh spoke of 'an effect of terribly disparate complementaries that reinforce each other by their opposition'. Beautiful.

★ Reproduced from an archive image, respectfully and lovingly restored and enhanced digitally, to remove the non-artistic blemishes and colour fading.
