Two Women & Peacock – Indian Miniature Art Greeting Card

A large Indian art greeting card featuring Two Women and a Peacock (Gujara Ragini), ca. 1780.

Two elegantly dressed women stand beneath trees in this beautifully poised scene: one tunes a tanpura beneath a fruit-bearing mango tree, while the other reaches towards a branch and looks towards the peacock nearby. Part of the Ragamala tradition, in which musical modes were transformed into visual poetry, the painting brings together music, nature and graceful human gesture in a wonderfully calm composition.

More than a card

The reverse has been designed as part of the card rather than as an afterthought. A rich decorative design inspired by the colours and ornament of Indian painting complements the artwork, together with the original title and date.
