"But the little mermaid had no need to do this, for at the mere sight of the bright liquid, which sparkled in her hand like a shining star, they drew back in terror..."
By Edmund Dulac, c. 1911.
From "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen, "Stories from Hans Andersen" published c. 1911.
Edmund Dulac (1882 – 1953) was one of the great figures from the Golden Age of Illustration.
His works, eclectic and ethereal, referencing both Japanese prints and Persian miniatures, had a pronounced influence of Orientalism about them. The resulting exquisite use of colour, detail, texture are unparalleled in creating the magical scenes that feel like real glimpses into the enchanting universe of fairy kingdoms and all things wonderful and magic ♥
