John Maler Collier was an English painter in the Pre-Raphaelite style and one of the most prominent portrait painters of his generation.

The 13th century legend of Lady Godiva became particularly popular during the Victorian Age, owing to the poem published by Lord Tennyson.

According to the legend, Lady Godiva, a wife of oppressive ruler Leofric, rode naked, covered only in her long hair, through the streets of Coventry to end the heavy taxation that starved the English village of Coventry. "Ride you naked thro’ the town, and I repeal it” said Leofric to his wife - so she did.
She rides through the completely empty streets of Coventry, its residents closing all the windows and staying indoors in display of gratitude and respect to the woman. A vision of absolute beauty, dreamlike, sensual, but angelic and pure at the same time, her delicate nakedness exudes pride and determination, a powerful symbol of protest and courage.
