The Japanese calligraphy is of an expression "Koi no Taki Nobori" (鯉の滝登り), meaning "carp swimming up the waterfall".

According to the ancient legend, if a Koi makes it to the top of the Yellow River, over the Dragon Gate waterfall, it will be transformed into a dragon—the most auspicious animal on land or sea, according to the Japanese.
Because of it's actual ability to swim upstream (and, evidently, even climb up the waterfalls!) Koi fish symbolise tenacity and strength in Japanese culture.
Their power to persevere in the face of adversity makes them symbols of aspiration, strength of spirit and good fortune ahead.
