"Honjō Shigenaga Parrying an Exploding Shell" (甲越勇将傳・本庄越前守繁長) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, ca. 1848.
Honjō Shigenaga was a Japanese samurai (1540-1614), who served Uesugi clan and fought many battles. Among many things that he was famous for, he was particularly known as the wielder of the famous blade Honjo Masamune, a katana representing the Shogunate during most of the Tokugawa Era (a National Treasure sword that went missing at the end of World War II - but that's a different fascinating story!)
In this epic print we see him blocking an exploding shell with a large iron shield at the battle of Mt. Saijo, during the fourth Battle of Kawanakajima, in 1561.
