Clearing Weather at Horikawa (Horikawa seiran - 堀川晴嵐) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, 1852
Eda Genzō (江田源蔵) from the series Eight Views of Military Brilliance (Yōbu hakkei - 燿武八景).

Eda Genzō Hirotsuna, shown in this dramatic image, was a retainer of Minamoto Yoshitsune (1159-89), a succesful military commander.
Eda was defending Yoshitsune's palace at Horikawa during the night attack, when he was struck by the arrow and then died in his master's arms.

The original "Eight Views" prints were conceived in China as series of formalized landscape paintings with metaphorical deeper meanings.
In these series of prints the same eight views—autumn moon, lingering snow, evening glow, vesper bells, returning boats, clearing weather, night rain and homing geese— were likened to Japanese heroes, depicted in the most striking compositions by Kuniyoshi.
