Yui: The Sisters (Shimei) Miyagino and Shinobu (由井) by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) and Utagawa Hiroshige, 1854, 8th month.

From the series The Fifty-three Stations by Two Brushes (Sōhitsu gojūsan tsugi 双筆五十三次) - in these prints the upper part consists of a Tokaido view by Hiroshige and in the lower part there are large figures by Kunisada I (Toyokuni III) illustrative of legends.

Miyagino and Shinobu were sisters, whose father was murdered by the samurai Shiga Danshichi.
After the death of her father, Shinobu arrived to Edo in search of her sister, Miyagino, a courtesan. The sisters meet and recognise each other and swear to avenge their fathers death. They train themselves in the martial arts in secret and then they challenge Shiga to a duel, killing him in the fight that followed. Their courage and filial loyalty made them popular characters in plays and art.
