Kabuki Actor Ōtani Oniji III as Yakko Edobei in the Play The Colored Reins of a Loving Wife ( 三代目大谷鬼次の奴江戸兵衛 ) by Tōshūsai Sharaku, 1794.

Along with the "Great Wave off Kanagawa" this is probably one of the most iconic examples of Japanese ukiyo-e art, countlessly referenced in popular culture and designated as Important Cultural Property.
This picture depicts a scene of a kabuki program called "Koinyobo Somewake Tazuna", the scene where Otani Oniji III is playing Yakko Edobe, who tries to rob Ippei of his money at Shijokawara. His sly face expression and grabby outstretched hands really give away the cunning nature of the character.
Sharaku was renowned for his yakusha-e portraits of kabuki actors, with bold and exaggerated facial expressions and gestures, striving for psychological impact and realism, rather than idealised beauty like his predecessors and contemporaries. His outstanding skills with no apparent apprenticeship has drawn much speculation, and researchers have long tried to discover his true identity—amongst the dozens of proposals, some suggest he was an obscure poet, others a Noh actor, or even the ukiyo-e master Hokusai.
