Keisai Eisen is most renown for his bijinga (pictures of beautiful women) and particularly his ôkubi-e ("large-head pictures"), such as the one here. Unlike his predecessors, such as Kitagawa Utamaro or Utagawa Kuniyoshi, who created the images of elegant, graceful and somewhat idealised women, Keisai Eisen vision of beauty is more sensual, with more angular faces and more passionate expressions.
