"Plum Garden at Kamata" (Kamata no Baien 蒲田の梅園)

The image is a skilful gradation of hues, descending from the pink colours of the sky to the deep greens of grass. At the forefront of the image, boldly placed and cut-off (to add to the almost photographic immediacy of the scene) is a traveller's palanquin. The traveller have casually flung their outer garment on the top and seemingly have left to wander around the gardens among other revellers, admiring the flowers or, perhaps, drinking sake and contemplating the calligraphy on the stone pillars here and there...
As always, Hiroshige's masterful composition invites the viewer into the scene, the eye wandering from one detail to another, until you find yourself deep in the gardens as well, wandering among the early blossoms.
