A cat playing with a piece of fabric is a common trope in the ukiyo-e genre, and more often than not it is an allusion to a scene with Onna San no Miya, the "Third Princess" in "The Tale of Genji", where the playful cat accidentally parted the curtain and revealed a princess behind it, making the handsome Kashiwagi (son of Genji's friend) catch a glimpse of her and immediately fall in love.

In this charming scene a young woman is folding a length of printed gossamer silk, its different levels of translucence skillfully rendered by the master.
The cat doesn't even need to pull on the fabric to reveal the charms of the beautiful seamstress - her robes slip off one shoulder, provocatively, yet innocently, as she is distracted by the antics of her little cat ♡
