Takiyasha the Witch and the Skeleton Spectre (or Mitsukuni Defying the Skeleton Spectre Invoked by Princess Takiyasha 相馬の古内裏 妖怪がしゃどくろと戦う大宅太郎光圀) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, 1833–1835. Centre part of woodblock triptych.
The print is depicting a moment when Gashadokuro (a mythical giant skeleton, created from the amassed bones of people who died in battle), summoned by the sorceress Princess Takiyasha, is appearing behind the warrior Mitsukuni.
Princess Takiyasha was the daughter of the warlord Masakado, who rebelled against the Emperor in Kyoto - the rebellion was unsuccessful and Masakado was killed. The great warrior Ōya no Tarō Mitsukuni have heard the rumours that Princess was raising the army of loyal soldiers and the dead to continue her fathers rebellion and came to the palace to investigate. We can see the moment when the summoned giant demon skeleton is trying to scare away the warrior and his companion, but Mitsukuni seems unfazed and defiantly stares right back into monster's face.
