Torii Gate to Mount Yuga Shrine – Hiroshige Japanese Ukiyo-e Greeting Card

A large Japanese art greeting card featuring Utagawa Hiroshige's Torii Gate to Mount Yuga Shrine at Tanokuchi Coast, Bizen (備前 田の口海浜 瑜賀山鳥居 / Bizen Tanokuchi Kaihin Yuga-san Torii), 1853, from his series Famous Places of the Sixty-odd Provinces.

A monumental stone torii rises beside the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea, marking the approach to sacred Mount Yuga while boats pass quietly along the coast. Hiroshige allows the towering gateway to dominate the composition, recreating the striking first impression it would have made on travellers arriving from the sea.
