Moon Pine – Hiroshige Japanese Ukiyo-e Greeting Card

A large Japanese art greeting card featuring Utagawa Hiroshige's The Moon Pine at Ueno (上野山内月のまつ / Ueno Sannai Tsuki no Matsu), 1857, from his celebrated series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.

Hiroshige uses the famous circular branch of Ueno's Moon Pine as a natural frame, opening a view across Shinobazu Pond towards the distant city. The unusual composition turns the pine itself into part of the view, guiding the eye through its ring-like branch towards the landscape beyond.
