"Ama Diver and Octopuses" (蛸と海女 Tako to Ama )
by Katushika Hokusai, 1814, from the book of shunga prints "Kinoe no Komatsu"

This is perhaps one of the most famous shunga print in the world and is definitely the most famous shunga print by Katsushika Hokusai.

It is also popularly known as "The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife", a title that arguably changes the context and the vibe of the scene entirely, transforming the woman from an independent ama (pearl) diver in full charge of her erotic desires into a lonesome wife of an absent husband, lost in dreams brought on by her unfulfilled needs.

It is likely that this print was intended by Hokusai as an erotic parody of the "Legend of Princess Tamatori", a tale of selfless sacrifice of an ama diver (she recovers a stolen treasure pearl from an underwater Dragon King and his many sea creature guards, including octopuses, and dies heroically in the process) . The Dragon King's palace is referenced in the calligraphy (in the background of the print), in the suggestive back-and-forth between all three subjects of the print. Over the years this image was interpreted in many ways, often (without considering the text and context) as a symbol of male gaze, sometimes as a representation of uninhibited female sexual power. Ever since it was created it had a tremendous influence on popular culture, reflected in works of renowned artists, in music and movies. All in all it's an outstanding print that keeps on leaving its mark on the beholders over the years!
