The Awa Province: Naruto Whirlpools (阿波 鳴門の風波 Awa, Naruto no fūha)
by Hiroshige Utagawa, from the "Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces" series (六十余州名所図会), 1855.

This epic print displays the famous Awa Province whirlpools, caused by the tide rushing through the Naruto Straits between Awaji Island and the north-western corner of Tokushima Prefecture on the island of Shikoku.
As always with Hiroshige, the composition is all about the vantage point, with the eyes going from the furiously swirling whirlpools, to the rocks, battered by foamy waves, then to the fluttering birds and finally to the Awaji island on the horison, with the rosy skies behind it. Stunning!

Really good quality reproduction of a clas...

Really good quality reproduction of a classic Ukiyo-e, based on a better original: A) One can see the grain of the wooden plates that were used in the original printing. B) The colours of the real ukiyo-e vary from batch to batch, for this reproduction an original with intensive colours was used.

You get what Strand advertises, an above-average quality modern reprint on very sturdy paper at a competitive price. Fast delivery in protective packaging.

Two really minor criticisms:
- sadly, the typical outer edge with four quarter circle notches in the print's corners is not reproduced
- the reproduction is in semi gloss paint, totally matte would be great.
