"Plum Park in Kameido" ("Kameido Umeyashiki" 亀戸梅屋舗)

The print is dominated by a dark trunk of a specific plum tree, the celebrated and the most famous tree in Edo, the "Sleeping Dragon Plum" (臥竜梅, garyūbai), renowned for the purity of its double blossoms, "so white when full in bloom as to drive off the darkness", according to one Edo guidebook. The tree was situated in Umeyashiki, a plum garden by the banks of the Sumida River in Kameido. In the foreground at the top left of the image there's a glimpse of a park sign and between the branches the smaller trees are seen and many figures of visitors behind a low fence, admiring the exquisite view.

Hiroshige's composition of the print is typically strong and original, with the powerful and dark body of the tree spreading across the image and then being suddenly cut off at the edges, as if it was a large abstract calligraphy print. The darkness of the trunk is offset and lifted by bright greens and reds of the ground and the sky, creating a perfect background for the white blossoms, some fully open in their delicate beauty, some still only white buds here and there.

This already famous composition was made even more popular when Van Gogh, who was a collector of Japanese prints, has copied this and one other print by Hiroshige ("Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi bridge and Atake") to try out the techniques that he admired in Hiroshige's work, such as cropped composition, strong use of outlines and colours and flat brushstrokes.
