ART PRINT
"Ario-maru" (有王丸) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, 1833–1835.
The print is depicting Ario-maru fighting a giant octopus on the seashore. Ariomaru was a servant of Shunkwan, a priest exiled to an inhospitable island by Kiyomori for plotting against him. Shunkwan's exile was a subject of No drama and it was often a theme for illustrations.
In this particular scene the loyal servant Ario-maru is fighting off the giant octopus that was about to kill Shunkwan.
