"Oiran Standing on a Snowy Courtyard Porch" (雪の庭に立つ花魁) by Utagawa Kunisada, ca.1830-40.

An oiran was a highly skilled and prestigious courtesan in Japan during the Edo period, known not only for her beauty but also for her mastery of the arts, including music, poetry, and tea ceremony. Unlike regular courtesans, oiran were part of the upper echelon of the entertainment world, often entertaining the elite with their refined talents, fashion, and sophistication.

A beauty stands on a porch overlooking the snowy courtyard. The gold kanzashi ornaments shine against her elaborately styled hair. She smiles coyly, her flawless face almost as white as the snow that blankets the garden of the rich tea house she is in. A small, delicate foot peeks from beneath her red undergarment, perhaps deliberately revealed. The beautiful oiran is dressed in many layers of expensive kimono, with an uchikake (the outermost robe, heavily brocaded and with a padded hem designed to trail on the floor) featuring a magnificent koi carp swimming upstream—an auspicious motif symbolizing great fortunes ahead.♡
