A Play on the Ukifune Chapter: Ferry on the Sumida River (Sumidagawa no Watashi Mitate Ukifune 隅田川の渡 見立浮ふね) by Utagawa Hiroshige, 1845
From the series "Famous Places in Edo Matched with Chapters of the Tale of Genji" (Edo Murasaki Meisho Genji), ca.1843-1847.

It’s certainly a long title for an artwork! It suggests a playful comparison to a scene from The Tale of Genji—specifically, the "Ukifune" ("A Boat Set Adrift") chapter, which tells of a beautiful princess who, unable to free herself from a love triangle, jumps from a boat into a lake but is rescued. The shell placed in the top right corner also alludes to Genji, as his name is closely connected to the traditional shell-matching game, kai-awase.

There is no direct depiction of the Ukifune scene here, except for the elaborately dressed beauty standing on a ferry (boat!) crossing the Sumida River. She is slightly huddled against the cold, either closing or shaking off her umbrella in a graceful gesture. In a typically cinematic composition by Hiroshige, we can see two umbrellas belonging to other passengers, cut off from the scene, while in the background, a man rafting on a log, fluttering birds, and softly falling snow add movement and dynamics to the view ♡

Haiku calligraphy on the back of the card:

"I could eat it! -
snow falling softly,
gently"

Kobayashi Issa (1763-1828)
