"Snow at Yanagibashi" (柳橋の雪), by Ohara Koson, 1927.

A snowy winter scene shows Yanagibashi, a famous "Willow Bridge" in what was once a sophisticated geisha district in Tokyo. The titular willows and the bridge are blanketed in soft snow, as are the houses on the distant shore of the wintry Kanda River.

Two figures—whose identities are concealed by the large umbrellas they hold aloft against the falling snow—are walking purposefully across the bridge. The snow on top of their umbrellas, their hurried steps, and the way they huddle against the chill instantly convey the crisp coldness of this clear winter day. The soft, curving lines of the bridge and the willows contrast with the geometric shapes of the umbrellas, adding a sense of movement and dynamism to this tranquil scene ♡
