"Hodogaya: The Katabira River and Katabira Bridge" (程ヶ谷 かたびら川 かたびら橋) by Utagawa Hiroshige, ca. 1848-49.
From The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido (Reisho Tokaido edition), ca. 1847-52.

In this particular print, Hiroshige depicts the station of Hodogaya, which was located along the Tōkaidō in present-day Yokohama. The composition centers around the Katabira River and the Katabira Bridge, important landmarks in the area.

The scene itself is tranquil and shows travelers in straw coats and kasa hats crossing the bridge. The background showcases soft rolling hills and a peaceful sky. Hiroshige’s use of color is both subtle and atmospheric, with the deep blues of the river contrasting with the earthy tones of the landscape and the wood of the bridge. His brilliant sense of perspective is also evident in how he leads the viewer's eye from the foreground toward the distant hills, creating a sense of depth.

As with many of Hiroshige’s Tōkaidō prints, this image captures not just the physical landscape, but also the spirit of travel during the Edo period—quiet, contemplative, and filled with simple moments of beauty. The print illustrates the typical daily life of travelers, emphasizing their connection to nature and the journey itself ♡
