"Nandina and Flycatchers in Snow" (南天の茂みに太蘭鳥) by Ohara Koson, 1929.

Two small flycatchers are perched delicately on snow-covered nandina (also called heavenly bamboo), a plant known for its bright red berries and green leaves that persist even in winter. The colour contrasts between the birds' dark blue, almost black plumage, the rich orange of the berries, deep green of the leaves and the soft whiteness of the snow creates a bright, energetic feeling of a crisp winter's day ♡

The print highlights Koson's exceptional skill in evoking natural beauty through a minimalist yet expressive composition. His technique shows strong influence from traditional ukiyo-e artists like Hiroshige but also reflects the influence of Western naturalistic art, which was becoming popular in Japan during the Meiji period.
Koson's works, including this piece, are celebrated for their elegance, subtle use of color, and ability to evoke a quiet, meditative mood.
