The Gion Shrine in Snow (祇園社雪中) by Utagawa Hiroshige, 1832.
From the series "Famous Views of Kyoto".

This classic work captures the serene beauty of a winter evening at Kyoto’s famous Gion Shrine. Now known as Yasaka Shrine, it is a popular tourist destination, but at the time it was called "Kanshin-in" (感神院, which can even be seen written on the torii gate plaque in the image). It was referred to as "Gion Shrine" because it was situated in Gion, Kyoto's geisha district, and the shrine was a popular place for many geisha and maiko, hosting various performances, rituals and events.
Everything—the pine trees, the shrine’s gate, buildings, and stone lanterns—is blanketed in snow. The small group of brightly dressed women at the entrance interrupts the calm blues and whites of the scene, adding a festive atmosphere touch. The traces in the snow suggest many comings and goings that evening, perhaps a New Year’s celebration or a traditional worship visit to ask for good fortune in the coming year. ♡
