Courage was a fundamental and highly valued principle in bushido, the code of the samurai. This courage encompassed physical bravery, where samurai fearlessly confronted danger and accepted death as an inevitable part of their path. They also demonstrated moral courage by standing up for their convictions, speaking out against injustice, and protecting the vulnerable. Emotional courage was integral, allowing them to maintain composure in challenging situations, make rational decisions, and act with clarity under pressure. Courage, intertwined with honour, loyalty, and self-discipline, was not only for personal virtue but also for the benefit of their lords, families, and society. Though interpretations of bushido could differ over time and among schools of thought, courage remained a constant and central element of the samurai code.
