APRON

A Samurai Neko print, with a calligraphy describing one of the seven principles of Bushido: Yuu - 勇 (Courage).
The Japanese calligraphy to the left says: "Yuu (Courage): to attain justice courage is essential"

Courage, as a fundamental principle of bushido, was highly valued and expected of the samurai. It had several aspects. The most obvious of course would be the sense of the physical courage - samurai were expected to fearlessly face danger and they were taught not to fear death, as it was considered an inevitable part of a warrior's life. This willingness to face danger without flinching was a hallmark of their courage.
Samurai were also required to have moral courage, meaning they were to stand up for what they believed was right, even in the face of adversity. This included speaking out against injustice, protecting the weak, and upholding their principles and honour.
Samurai were expected to have emotional courage and be able to maintain a calm and composed demeanor in challenging situations. This emotional discipline was seen as a form of courage because it allowed them to make rational decisions and act with clarity under pressure.

Courage, as a virtue in bushido, was closely tied to the other principles of honour, loyalty, and self-discipline. The samurai code expected individuals to act courageously not just for their own sake but for the sake of their lords, their families, and their society.
It's important to note that the specific interpretation of bushido could vary between different periods of Japanese history and among different schools of thought, but the value of courage remained a constant and central element of the samurai code.
