Zhang Qing (Botu'usen Chosei), from the series "The 108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden" (通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人之一個　浪裡白跳張順人), by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, late 1820s

"The 108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden (Chinese original: Shui Hu Chuan or "Water Margin" as it is also known)" is one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature, a story of 108 brave outlaws, who started as rebels against the government and later, after the granted amnesty, fought the injustice (and nomadic enemy attacks) across the country.
Utagawa Kuniyoshi, renowned for his intense compositons and dynamic character depictions, has outdone himself with these series, bringing both himself and the novel an immense popularity.

One of the last heroes to join the bandits - and one of the hardest to capture! Named Zhang Qing ("Featherless Arrow") he excelled in battle by being both extremely skillful at flinging stones (hence the nickname) and masterful at riding a horse. He would often feign a sudden retreat, luring his opponents closer and then taking them out by a precise heavy pebble missile. Sly!

Here we see him in the heat of the action, face contorted in a calculating glare as he flings yet another deadly stone from the special sack on his chest! His richly detailed gear is a riot of colour and even his battle horse is gloriously bedecked for the battle, gold bells, silks and tassels flung in the air as it kicks up furiously, carrying its master away!
