COTTON CANVAS TOTE
"The Mystery Of The Cat" (五拾三次之内猫の怪) by Utagawa Yoshifuji, 1847.
From the Travelling the 53 Stations series.
This image is made in the yose-e technique ("assembled picture"), with a huge monster cat created using nine assorted cats.
The mouth is made of the cat collar and the collar bells make up the huge spooky eyes.
This is a depiction of the Monster Cat of Okazaki, that was haunting the temple near Okazaki along the Tokaido Road, waiting to attack young women who came to visit the temple - a yokai monster story made into a famous kabuki play.
