JAPANESE WOODBLOCK
ART PRINT
"Beauty At The Garden Well", by Kajita Hanko, 1901.
This print was produced as kuchi-e (frontispiece) art for the cover of the novel “Senkintei” by the writer Chizuka Reisui by artist Kajita Hanko (梶田半古), a prolific kuchi-e artist with a unique and fresh style.
Here we see a young woman, touching up her hairstyle while gazing in a small garden well. Her bright kimono and obi are contrasted by the autumnal hues of the garden, one branch even decending across her sleeve like a colourful accent. The light and graceful pose makes her look look a little bird or a butterfly, a delicate creature that lands in a garden only for a second before fluttering away in a burst of colour.
