By Hiroshige Utagawa, from the "Famous Places of the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō (GojūSanTsugi-MeishoZu'e 五十三次名所圖會 竪絵東海道 宮)" series (Kyōka edition / Sanoki Tōkaidō).

One of the most striking prints from the popular revisiting of the Tokaido series from the landscape master.
Each design features a comic poem called a "kyōka," so these series are referred to as the "Kyōka Tōkaidō" series.

Hara, the 13th (or 14th - depending on edition) station on the Tokaido Road was very important because of its proximity to Mount Fuji, the cultural and religious icon of Japan. The landscape is dominated by the monumental Fujisan, the blue of the skies and white of the clouds really offsetting the pink hue of the mountain.
At the forefront, a tall pine, three large houses among trees, a few pilgrim and horse figures on the road are seen - placed there, it seems, just to be dwarfed by the majestic Mount Fuji, rising high above, its summit escaping the print itself!
