The original title of this artwork is "納涼" (Nōryō). In Japanese culture, "Nōryō" refers to the practice of appreciating the coolness of the evening, especially during the hot summer months. This often involves activities like sitting by water, enjoying the breeze, or viewing the moon, encapsulating a sense of seasonal relaxation and enjoyment.
This atmospheric woodblock print captures a tranquil summer evening, where a small boat drifts across a quiet river, carrying elegantly dressed passengers who admire the glowing fireflies.
