"Looking Annoying" (うるさそう Urusasou) - also known as "Teasing the Cat" ("annoying" is refering here to the perceived feelings of the cat being fussed non-stop :))
by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, ca. 1888, from the series "Thirty-two Aspects of Women (風俗三十二相 Fuzoku sanjuniso)"

A young beauty from the Kansei period is playing with her kitty - despite the title the cat looks rather pleased with the attention!
Perhaps it's the viewer who is invited to be annoyed at the lady, who looses all her manners at the sight of a cute cat?.. Her little mouth open in delight, probably saying sweet nothings to the cat, she's completely lost in excitement, never minding her expensive and elaborate hairdo being ruined or her gorgeous outfit being crinkled (and possibly covered in cat hair :) ♥

★ Reproduced from an archive image, respectfully and lovingly restored and enhanced digitally, to remove the non-artistic blemishes and colour fading.
