In Japan foxes are believed (or, at least, used to be believed) to have supernatural powers, including the ability to shape-shift into beautiful humans to trick and to deceive guileless people! They are said to possess an All-Hearing Ear and the Infinite Vision, knowledge of Past and Present and of souls of others...

Even though this artwork has a typical of Kōson naturalistic style, the moonlight, the windswept reeds, the seeming eerie silence, accentuated by the water circles set off by the dipped paw, give it an ethereal feeling, suggestive of the fox's mystical nature...
