Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) was an influential Indian painter and artist known for his pioneering efforts in merging European academic techniques with traditional Indian themes. His rich body of work includes portraits of Indian nobility, mythological scenes, and depictions of everyday life. His art played a pivotal role in shaping modern Indian artistic sensibilities and continues to be celebrated for its fusion of realism and Indian cultural elements.

"Shakuntala" is a renowned painting by the Indian artist Raja Ravi Varma. In this work, Ravi Varma captures a poignant moment from the ancient Indian epic, the "Mahabharata": Shakuntala, a maiden of ethereal beauty, is lost in contemplation as she reflects on her love for King Dushyanta.

Shakuntala is portrayed seated on a rock amidst a lush and serene backdrop. Her traditional attire and jewellery reflect her regal lineage and status. She gazes into the distance, engrossed in her emotions and thoughts of her absent husband. A pink lotus flower lies next to her, serving as a poignant symbol of her connection with Dushyanta.

In the distance, we see the divine sage Durvasa approaching Shakuntala's hermitage. Lost in her thoughts, Shakuntala does not greet the sage, and he lays a curse on her, stating that the person she was dreaming of would forget about her altogether (but the legend has a happy ending after all!).

The atmosphere in the painting is suffused with a sense of daydream and loving yearning. The subtle interplay of light and shadow adds depth to the composition, enhancing the emotional resonance. Ravi Varma's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate rendering of Shakuntala's saree, the natural elements of the forest, and the delicate features that reflect her contemplative state.
