A Birthday greeting card with a ukiyo-e print of outstanding beauty, chosen and printed with love ｡.:*♡
All-over background print using traditional Japanese pattern elements, with the name of the artist and title of the artwork printed on the back of the card.

"Cats Suggested As The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō" (猫飼好五十三疋) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, 1850.

This print is a playful spoof on Hiroshige's "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō"(1833–34), an impressive best-seller of the genre, enough so that even a decade on this ukiyo-e cat-pun print was still relevant!
Whilst Hiroshige's works captured every post station of the Tōkaidō ('Eastern Sea Road') through various landscapes, Utagawa Kuniyoshi goes straight for wordplay and puns on the names of the stations, representing them with cats and their antics. The wordplay subtleties might be lost on a non-Japanese speakers, the cats can be certainly appreciated by anyone (♡∀♡●)
Utagawa Kuniyoshi was a great cat-lover and it was said that he always had his studio full of cats, apparently he could even be often seen working with a kitten or a cat snuggled in his kimono. If we could we all would! ♡
