"Brahminy Starling with Two Antheraea Moths, Caterpillar, and Cocoon on Indian Jujube Tree", by Sheikh Zain al-Din (Sheikh Zainuddin), 1777.

Sheikh Zain al-Din was an 18th Century Bengali Muslim artist, working in "Company style" (kampani kalam) painting technique, a blend of traditional elements from Rajput and Mughal painting with a more Western perspective and themes. The painting style aimed to appeal to European (especially British) patrons and since many of these patrons worked for the various East India companies, this painting style came to be associated with the name, although it was in fact also used for paintings produced for local rulers and other Indian patrons. The subject matter was often documentary, rather than imaginative, often depicting scenes from everyday life, festivals, sights or plants and animals of the subcontinent.

There's something extremely satisfying in the precision of the lines and minute detail of this work. It is simultaneosuly highly stylized and very organic, with the balletic balance of every little creature on the branch and the gorgeous imperfections of the leaves and flowers. Beautifully observed and executed with utmost clarity and love.
