"Ducklings", by John Everett Millais, 1889.

Sir John Everett Millais was an English painter and one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
Millais was famous for his detailed, realistic style of painting. However, in this work he goes for broadly brushed style, with loose strokes and subtle light.
The little girl in her soft pink and green pastel colours seems to be almost lit up in this otherwise quite dark painting. Her hair is adorably messed up and one of the shoes seem to be damaged, her hands are clutching either a handkerchief or a letter. The whole scene seems to be allegorical - perhaps she is one of the ducklings, an "ugly duckling" from the then popular Hans C. Andersen's tale, with hints of coming changes in her future already present in her charmingly serious face.
