"Dolce Far Niente*" (also known as "The White Feather Fan"), by John William Waterhouse, 1879.
A young woman lies on few decorative rugs casually strewn across a marble floor, with a velvet cushion supporting her head and a single sunflower in a black vase beside her. She appears to be lost in reverie, her eyes fixed on the feathers from her fan that she absentmindedly sends floating in the air. Is she contemplating something in particular, or is she simply lost in this tranquil state of languor?..
*"Dolce far niente" means 'sweetness of doing nothing", "sweet idleness" in Italian.
