Modern Beauty in a Snowstorm (富世美人雪吹姿)
by Kikugawa (Kikukawa) Eizan, 19th century.

Just like his predecessor, the great Kitagawa Utamaro, Kikugawa Eizan was renowned for his depictions of beautiful women, highly stylised and graceful. Their face expressions are usually doll-like, to add to the impression of an ideal and intangible beauty.

Here we see a richly-dressed young woman caught in a flurry of snow, one hand tilting the umbrella to shield her face and elaborate hairdo from the snow and wind; and another hand gathering the many layers of her opulent attire, her high geta sandals struggling in the deep snow and the hems of her kimono. The large soft flakes of snow, looking almost like falling sakura petals, overlay the lavish prints of her dress with their own pattern. The flowing line of the composition from the gracefully turned face to the tiny white bare foot gives an immediate impression of a refined and fragile beauty ♡
