“Back Gate of the Shrine at Kameido: The Tamaya Restaurant (亀戸天神裏門玉屋, Kameido Tenjin Uramon Tamaya) by Utagawa Hiroshige, c.1838–1840.

A tranquil winter scene from Hiroshige’s celebrated series Famous Restaurants of Edo (Edo kōmei kaitei zukushi).
Snow falls softly over the back gate of Kameido Tenjin Shrine, blanketing the quiet street and rooftops. Three women, likely visitors to the nearby Tamaya Restaurant, walk carefully through the snow, their colourful outfits bright against the muted landscape.

The red shrine gate visible behind them, a gentle contrast to the subdued tones of winter. Hiroshige’s masterful composition captures not only the peaceful beauty of the season but also the refined atmosphere of Edo’s bustling yet elegant city life. The print reflects the artist’s gift for transforming familiar places into scenes of poetic serenity — a moment of stillness within the rhythm of the city.
