Back Gate of the Shrine at Kameido – Hiroshige Japanese Ukiyo-e Christmas Greeting Card

A large Japanese Christmas greeting card featuring Utagawa Hiroshige's Back Gate of the Shrine at Kameido: The Tamaya Restaurant (亀戸天神裏門玉屋 / Kameido Tenjin Uramon Tamaya), c.1838–1840, from the series Famous Restaurants of Edo.

Three women walk through a snowy scene near Kameido Tenjin Shrine and the Tamaya restaurant, where the red shrine gate stands out against the winter stillness. A deep red and gold seigaiha-inspired frame complements the print; the Japanese greeting on the reverse translates as “Wishing you a joyful holiday season full of smiles.”

More than a card

On the front, the ukiyo-e artwork is carefully set within a festive patterned background, with a seasonal greeting in English positioned to complement the image without obscuring it.

Turn the card over to find a Japanese seasonal greeting in calligraphy, accompanied by an English translation and the artist’s name. The fully printed reverse uses a coordinating pattern for a rich, finished appearance.

Beautiful enough to keep as well as send, the card is perfect for Christmas and New Year correspondence and also lovely for framing afterwards as a miniature art print.
