"The Common Bramble or Blackberry" (Rubus Fruticosus.)
From the book "The Moral of Flowers", 1833 (engravings by William Clark, "formerly draughts-man and engraver to the London Horticultural Society", words and poetry by Rebecca Hey).

An illustration from an early 19th century book - a lovely example from the time when interests in botany, science and natural history in general came beautifully together with poetry, literature and visual arts, expressing the newly realised resonance with the emotional and physical sides of human nature.
The book was very popular in its time, with each gorgeous plant image accompanied by selected lines from acclaimed poets about each flower and Rebecca Hey's own original prose and poetry:

"...Tis that though suffering ill,
Yea, spurned and trodden by each passer by,
Blossom and berry dost thou proffer still,
As all unmindful of the injury..."

★ Respectfully and lovingly restored and enhanced digitally, to remove the non-artistic blemishes and colour fading ♡
