"A Mermaid", by John William Waterhouse, 1900.

This beautiful work is likely to have been inspired by Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem "The Mermaid" (1830) which includes the lines:

"Who would be
A mermaid fair,
Singing alone,
Combing her hair"

The beautiful mermaid is combing her long luscious hair, lips parted in a siren song, beside her a shell filled with pearls, which some believed to be formed from the tears of dead sailors.

The wet hair ends sticking to her porcelain skin; the gentle curves of her soft body and neatly tucked tail; the wistful, dreamy look in her eyes - all of it creates an image of poetic femininity, dark and captivating at the same time.
