Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge and Atake (Ōhashi Atake no yūdachi 大はしあたけの夕立)
by Hiroshige Utagawa, from the "One Hundred Famous Views Of Edo" series, 1857.

Sudden shower pours over the wooden Shin-Ōhashi (New Great) bridge over the Sumida River, caught-up people hurrying away, covering themselves with hats, umbrellas and straw capes, but most likely getting drenched anyway!
Hiroshige often has an almost cinematic feel about his works, creating movement and urgency with his composition and adding context with finely observed details. Here, the strong crisscrossing lines of the downpour (a challenging skill in woodblock carving), the log raft coming steadily from under the bridge, the dashing people and the many overlapping lines of perspective give the image the sense of motion and activity. It is one of the best-known prints by landscape master and one of the most famous Japanese art masterpieces.
