BOXED MUG

Three remarkable artworks by by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, featuring valiant samurai in battle!

★ Printed on a high-quality ceramic mug and presented in a matching box with traditional Japanese "seigaiha" all-over pattern and calligraphy of the artist's name and titles of the artworks.

1. "Usami Suruga no kami Sadayuki" (宇佐美駿河守定行), ca 1848.
From the series Koetsu yusho den Takeda-ke nijushi-sho (甲越勇將傳武田家廾四將). Usami Sadayuki (also known as Usami Sadamitsu), a samurai of the Sengoku period, one of the longest and best-known servants of the Uesugi clan of Echigo. Pictured here in the midst of the battle, mounted on a fiery black horse in full glory of his armour and deflecting a flying sword with the shaft of the spear!.

2. "Honjō Shigenaga Parrying an Exploding Shell" (甲越勇将傳・本庄越前守繁長), ca. 1848.
Honjō Shigenaga was a Japanese samurai (1540-1614), who served Uesugi clan and fought many battles. Among many things that he was famous for, he was particularly known as the wielder of the famous blade Honjo Masamune, a katana representing the Shogunate during most of the Tokugawa Era (a National Treasure sword that went missing at the end of World War II - but that's a different fascinating story!)
In this epic artwork we see him blocking an exploding shell with a large iron shield at the battle of Mt. Saijo, during the fourth Battle of Kawanakajima, in 1561.

3. ""Senzaki Yagoro Noriyasu Running with Spear" ( 千崎矢五郎則休), 1847-48.
From the series "Stories of the True Loyalty of the Faithful Samurai" (誠忠義士傳 Seichu gishi den).

★ Reproduced from archive images, respectfully and lovingly restored and enhanced digitally, to remove the non-artistic blemishes and colour fading.
